Is January a good time to surf in Sri Lanka?
Is March a good time to surf in Sri Lanka?
Is August a good time to surf in Sri Lanka?

…really…

Just tell me when is it not a good time to surf in
Sri Lanka?

There is always a wave waiting for you…
The choice is yours

There is no point coming all the way across the globe to Sri Lanka if the waves are crap. So here is our attempt at explaining when is a good time to surf in Kabalana and Ahangama area in the South Coast of Sri Lanka. Let’s begin with the short answer, Most times of the year is surfable in the South Coast of Sri Lanka. Don’t forget that we are dealing with mother nature,so no one can predict for sure .But follow our guide as we have been riding waves in the area for many years and we have the local knowledge and insights. And to prove it we have attached some pictures of surfing at various months in this blog.

A different wave for every season and plenty of spots near Solas Surf

All said, the best time to surf in the south coast of Sri Lanka depends on the skill level and preference. The climate and crowds ebb and flow with the monsoons but there are great wave conditions for beginners and experienced surfers most of the time in the South Coast of Sri Lanka.

Solas Surf is ideally located on an excellent surf break. Conditions are surfable almost all year round. One of the reasons for this is that we are located where the South West meets South East so wed on’t get the worst of the low season and waves can still be good through out the year whether you area beginner or already riding green waves.

Even though conditions are surfable we split the calendar into three buckets of Peak,Semi-Peak and Quiet. Whilst this normally follows tourist arrivals, they also have some correlation to conditions related to rain and importantly wind direction, which is vital for surf conditions. Off shore winds occur during the Peak months of November, December, January, February, March & April and prove to be the best time.

Peak season

November, December, January, February, March & April

These months have the best waves on the south coast of Sri Lanka. These dry months are considered the high season, with cooler temperatures, ideal off shore wind sand waves up to 2-6 feet in height. We have our own beach front and the surf is good in front of the villa for both beginners and experienced surfers. For more experienced surfers there is “The Rock” which is accessed from the same beach front as our villa. There are many other surf breaks all within 5 minutes to 10 minutes from the Solas Surf villa such Sticks,Insights (both short walks from Solas Surf), Lazy Left and Rams in Midigama (about a 10 minute tuk tuk ride from Solas Surf). We also know a few other spots around here which are less known and off the beaten track and will be a good change up during your stay.

Quieter Period

April, May, June, July, August, September and October

The low season is slightly warmer with occasional monsoon rains, waves swelling between 2-8 feet with both on shore and off shore winds. The summer seasons are less crowded, and the waves are still great for beginners. Rain if any,is quite sporadic and does not typically go on all day. Most guests welcome the colder breeze and the soothing calm that follows. Some great spots to surf during this period are The Island Beach Break in Weligama, Jungle Beach,Fisherman’s Bay Reef break and Weligama Beach Break.

Shoulder Seasons

October, November and Late April

By mid-October off shore wind sand the swells rise to between 4–8 feet. This inter-monsoonal period has occasional heavy rain but leaves the environs lush and cool. Most surfers say this is an excellent time to be here as its lush and green, not too hot, not so busy, and the surf is pumping. In late April the waves begin to swell again between 2 to 8 feet but are uncrowded and unaffected by monsoons. Great places to surf during this time are The Sticks Reef break, Kabalana Beach break, The Lazy Left Reef Break and Plantation Reef Break.
